— The stepson of former Schenectady police chief Gregory Kaczmarek played a significant role in a well-organized drug ring selling in the Capital Region, a state prosecutor said Monday.

Assistant Deputy Attorney General Michael Sharpe said Miles Smith, 20, moved and sold drugs as part of a sophisticated operation, which state and federal police say they busted on Thursday. The operation distributed cocaine and heroin on Schenectady’s North Side and throughout the Capital Region, police said.

Smith is the son of Lisa Kaczmarek, who was arrested Thursday following the 13-month drug investigation, and charged with felony conspiracy. She is accused of selling drugs to her own circle of clients.

A total of 24 people face a combined total of 84 felony and misdemeanor counts. Eleven of them either had bail hearings or arraignments Thursday before Acting Schenectady County Court Judge Christine Clark. Clark set bails ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. She set Smith’s bail at $10,000 cash and $20,000 bond.

Only the drug ring’s alleged leaders, Kerry Kirkem, 40, of Van Vranken Avenue, and Oscar Mora, 30, of Plank Road, Waterford, were denied bail. They were arraigned Friday and held without bail.

Hazel Nader, 42, of University Place, Schenectady, accused as a top lieutenant managing the drug operation, faces a bail hearing Friday.

Smith faces charges of conspiracy and selling a controlled substance. If convicted on the conspiracy charge, he could face 81⁄3 to 25 years in prison, Clark said.

Smith also faces a charge of attempting to smuggle contraband into the Schenectady County Jail, Sharpe said. He said the charge is pending as a felony, which could increase Smith’s jail time if convicted.

Smith allegedly retrieved packages of cocaine for Kirkem and agreed to sell cocaine to a customer. At one point in late February, Smith and another man indicted allegedly moved a safe used to store and conceal cash, weapons and cocaine and other drugs from a “stash house” at 206 Union St. to the stash house at 1822 Avenue A.

Sharpe said authorities are still seeking Maximo “Max” Doe, 29, of Felway Drive, Coram, the alleged source; and Wilfred Cordero, 30, of Hegeman Street, a worker.

Sharpe said two of the accused, Christopher Toogood, 24, of Union Street, Schenectady, and Bernard Ryan, 46, of Clement Road, Schenectady, played minor roles in the operation. He said his office has made offers to place them in drug court rather than face criminal trials.

Also appearing in court Monday were:

*  Steven Torres, 22, of Maplewood Avenue, Schenectady, whose bail was set $50,000 cash;

*  Daniel Evans, 26, of Schenectady, no bail set, pending an application July 30;

*  Hector Gomez, 24, of Foster Avenue, Schenectady, $20,000 cash bail set;

*  Ronald Hughes, 25, of Huron Court, Schenectady, no bail set pending a bail application hearing;

*  Israel Torres, 25, of University Place, Schenectady, $20,000 bail set;

*  Michelle Hernandez Soto, 30, of University Place, Schenectady, no bail set pending a bail application hearing;

*  Lisa Perkins, 33, of Hegeman Street, Schenectady, no bail set pending a bail application hearing.
