This editorial is so ridiculous and lame, it's funny. Was it meant as some kind of inter-office joke? The same newspaper that denigrates NYRA for supposedly developing problem gamblers is the same one that runs a full page of selections from not one but two handicappers during the entire race meet for the explicit purpose of helping bettors select winners. And the same paper that promotes the heck out of their handicappers all summer!
NYRA has had its problems in the past, no one is disputing that. But suggesting that the college scholarship is just a front for handing a thousand bucks in cash to a college student to gamble with is absolutely preposterous. One trip to a racetrack, espcially Saratoga, where there are enough distractions that you can spend an entire day and not even know the races are going on or see a bet being made, does not create a compulsive gambler.
This editorial has the fingerprints of a certain Gazette and anti-NYRA activist all over it.
The deposits will be refunded if Glens Falls doesn't get a team. The "non-refundable" part is if someone pays the $25 then decides not to pay the balance.
