As I was cleaning my desk, I came across a list of the 100 largest lakes in the Adirondacks. Of these, nine are motorless. Two or three of the nine are so remote from roads as to be impractical to paddle. Only one of the lakes, Little Tupper, falls within the top 20 (it's No. 19). Five of the nine are in the bottom third in terms of size. Environmental groups are suing the state to keep floatplanes off Lows Lake. If they succeed, Lows will be the largest motorless lake in the Park. At 3,122 acres, it is 14th on the list. -- Phil Brown
