In regards to David Mearn's letter, It seems you are still stuck in denial. Alcohol kills far more than illegal drugs. People drink alcohol so they don't have to deal with their problems also. If you do any research you will see there are many people, ex-police officers, judges, and even prosecuters, whom say the Drug War is a failure. So are you saying that you prefer a child to walk down a street and buy drugs opposed to an adult walking into a clinic and buying it? We need to take the drugs out of the streets, for the children and them only. Let the government deal with them. We have agents being killed all the time on the Mexican border. Thousands of murders could be prevented. If we were to legalize drugs I am sure there would still be a black market. So we go after them right? Punish them. It would be just as effective as now with only 10% of drug related crimes being solved. At the end though I would like to express my graditude to all who debate on this issue. It's a start. Of course we can't both win, but atleast we are talking about it. There has to be a way to come together and figure out the best solution. Also to anyone interested read these books they will amaze you. "Drug Crazy" by Mike Gray and "Why our Drug Laws Have FAILED and What We Can Do About It by Judge James P. Gray.
Regarding George B. Hughes letter, I agree with him 100% when he states that drugs are a medical condition. The problem is how we are dealing with drug users. Incarceration is not the answer. The drug war is a "failure". We all know drugs ruin peoples lives, but so does tboacco, alcohol, and pharmacutical drugs at far higher rates. The truth is drugs are here to stay. Drugs we deem legal kill millions of Americans every year. I personally would prefer regulation and control as it would lower murder rates, save childrens lives(caught in cross-fire or drug deal gone wrong), and save the economy billions. Imagine if there was all that money? We could have the best drug treatment, the best education, and we could rebuild all of our inner cities for a fresh start, a new beginning, one that's cleaner, safer, and more educated. No more parents losing their children to the streets, no more orphan children. Some people will always do drugs, most will not! I really don't think the average person would start using drugs just because it was legal I wouldn't would you? Would anyone you know for that matter? You do know that alcohol is the hardest drug for teenagers to find right?
To the prosecuter, I am sure you feel so proud of your conviction. I am sure you are patting yourselves on the back. Another drug dealer sent to prison. How about finding murderers? What about that young girl found dead in Albany stabbed to death? What about the UAlbany student? What about Susan Lyall? We don't take about that. Do some real work and maybe you would gain more respect! This girl will go to prison and her life will never be the same. Ever, especially since Steven Cook plasters her name in the paper everytime she goes to court. She will always be known as that girl. My thoughts and prayers are with her and I hope she can get her life on track. Everone knows this story is complete BS with the special treatment given. To her family, forgive her and be there for her she will need you!
