Congressman to tour Lake George
U.S. Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, is taking out a kayak on Lake George on Wednesday to check out efforts to mitigate the damage of invasive species.
The tour, which will include local leaders, will launch from the public beach on Lake Avenue at 2:15 p.m. and will head over to an area where Asian clam treatments are being conducted. Then it is on to Shepard Park, where the group will board the Lake George Association’s Rosalia Anna Ashby, a floating classroom, to view other mitigation efforts.
Earlier this year Owens and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, came to Bolton's Landing to voice support for the Invasive Fish and Wildlife Prevention Act. At that time they also announced that the EPA will fund two boat inspection and washing stations for Lake George.
At the end of June, it was decided that Lake George would require mandatory boat inspections to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Also under discussion will be efforts to increase tourism in the area.
