Road construction along Route 73

Anyone thinking of heading to Lake Placid or just to hike in the nearby peaks needs to be aware of road construction now underway on Route 73 along the Cascade Lakes.

The state Department of Environmental Conservations said two of the five parking areas used for access to Cascade Mountain, Porter Mountain and western Pitchoff Mountain will be closed, and a third will be limited in size. State officials noted that parking along the road is prohibited.

The road will be completely closed on the weekend of May 11.

"Hikers should seek out other hiking opportunities during the month of May," DEC officials said. "Construction is expected to be completed by Memorial Day weekend."

Also in the Lake Placid area, Old Military Road, which connects Route 73 and Route 86, is closed for construction. The route is a way to bypass Lake Placid, but during May people will need to detour through the village of Lake Placid. That construction is also expected to wrap up by Memorial Day weeken
