Veterans' shelters to benefit from $25K Home Depot prize
BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga Rural Preservation Co., which runs two shelters for homeless military veterans, has won a $25,000 gift card from Home Depot in a contest sponsored by the Home Depot Foundation.
Now, it's on to the next round.
Starting Wednesday, May 1, the local organization will be competing against eight other monthly winners for larger cash prizes, of $250,000, $150,000, and $100,000. Winners are chosen by vote, and supporters can vote through May 31. People can vote once a day from any mobile device they have, at www.facebook.com/homedepotfoundation. People can also find a web link at Rural Preservation's web site, www.vethelpny.org.
Rural Preservation operates separate shelters for homeless veteran men and women in Ballston Spa and Ballston, respectively.
The $25,000 gift card will be used to help pay for additional living space in the women's shelter.
Partnering with Team Depot and volunteers from Rebuilding Together Saratoga County, the organization will build a study/office for veterans actively seeking employment and completing school work.
The plan would also incorporate an exercise room and an outdoor gardening area. The workers will also build additional storage space and will paint, install sheetrock and insulation, and provide landscaping.
