Local bakery takes over library's cafe

Fans of The Bread Basket Bakery can now get a fix at the Saratoga Springs Public Library.

The beloved Spring Street bakery took over the library's cafe on Monday and plans to stay until December, replacing Higher Grounds Cafe.

Higher Grounds owner Kimberlie de Silva moved her business out of the library on June 22.

"For close to 10 years, Kimberlie has provided an excellent service that has enhanced the library-going experience," library Director Issac Pulver said in a statement, "And we will miss seeing her each day."

The library planned to make changes to the cafe anyway as part of a remodeling project tentatively slated to start in January, and the departure of Higher Grounds pushed library officials to find a new tenant before that happens.

The Bread Basket will serve a pared-down version of its baked good and lunch menu at the library cafe, including its pot pies, quiche, baked treats and coffee. Owner Matthew Tallman said he also plans to offer homemade soups and sandwiches made on the bakery's fresh breads, plus healthy snacks that children will like.

Renovations to the library include expanding the Teen Room and the Book Bag Shop that sells used books and raises money for the Friends of the Saratoga Springs Public Library. In the process, library officials plan to relocate the cafe and possibly add outdoor seating.
