City GOP backs new sheriff candidate
Republican Jeff Gildersleeve has entered the race for Saratoga County Sheriff with the support of the Saratoga Springs Republican Committee.
Gildersleeve, who has more than three decades of law enforcement experience, currently lives in Ballston Lake. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, the state Police and most recently worked in the Warren County Sheriff’s office.
“I’m driven by a desire to smartly manager our law enforcement resources as well as to protect and serve the residents of our great county at a high level, I plan to seek the office of Saratoga County Sheriff and accomplish those goals,” he said in a statement.
Gildersleeve’s extensive experience includes various positions in the New York State Police such as Trooper, Sergeant, Investigator and Senior Investigator. He has also been responsible with supervising uniformed Troopers, Investigators, Detectives and Special Agents from various local, county, state and Federal policing agencies. The direct result of his supervision has been thousands of major felony arrests and prosecutions.
Gildersleeve edged out Republican hopeful Michael Zurlo in Monday's meeting, according to Committee Chairman David Harper. He said the committee has 2,094 weighted votes for the Saratoga County Republican Committee's sheriff endorsement.
"1,017 for Zurlo and 1,077 for Gildersleeve," Harper said. "As there was no motion to make the vote unanimous, the weighted votes will be cast accordingly at the County [Executive] Committee meeting, thus giving Gildersleeve a 70 vote advantage."
He noted that in some occasions the committee voting is done in a winner takes all fashion.
Gildersleeve also announced the support of The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association. The group's political arm is endorsing him based on his background as a firearms instructor and his committment to the second amendment.
"[The The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association] encourages Saratoga County residents to support Gildersleeve in both the Primary and General Elections,” the group said in a release.
According to the facebook page of Zurlo, he has been endorsed by the Stillwater, Mechanicville, Corinth, Milton and Wilton Republican Committees. Sadousky has been endorsed by the Greenfield Republican Committee, according to his Facebook page.
