Dennis Drue's attorney requests new venue

Dennis Drue's attorney is requesting his trial be taken out of Saratoga County.

Steve Coffey said that everyone in the county was touched by the tragedy on the Northway last year, which claimed the life of two Shenendehowa High School seniors and prompted the charges against his client, so he is looking for a new venue.

"This tragedy absolutely consumed the entire county," said Coffey.

His motion has been filed with the appellate division of the state Supreme Court.

Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III said, "The motion is entirely too early."

"Secondly, the standard isn't just if [perspective jurors have heard about it] or if they've been moved by the story," he added.

"The standard is, can they be fair and impartial," Murphy said. "If they can answer yes, they can serve on the jury."

Earlier this week, the prosecution scored a victory in the case, as the judge ruled that statements made by Drue after the accident were admissible.

Seriously, Murphy? You and the rest of the county have already convicted this person. You have attended public events in honor of the teens who died. It was a horrible event, but let's not make it worse by hanging this guy. Given all the love and caring expressed by families, friends and strangers towards the victims, it would be hard to find an impartial jury. The request to move the trial is appropriately made before, not after, it becomes apparent that justice will not be just, but revengeful.
