Saratoga DBA supports proposed parking garage
A proposed parking garage on Hamilton Street has the backing of the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association.
The Saratoga Springs Planning Board will hear plans tonight for a parking garage that would accompany a proposed six-story hotel behind the Rip Van Dam building. The parking garage, which would be located between Congress Street and William Street, is viewed as a welcome development by Saratoga Springs DBA President Jeff Clark.
"You don't have to be from saratoga to know we have had a parking problem," said Clark.
He said the city's Woodlawn Avenue parking garage has been helpful alleviating some of the current demand for parking, but demand will increase rapidly with new condominiums and the downtown movie theater.
"We have to take proactive steps," he said.
Clark said the DBA doesn't object to the proposed hotel as long as a parking garage is part of the project.
According to the May meeting minutes of the city's Planning Board, board Chairman Clifford Van Wagner raised concerns about the lack of parking initially proposed with the hotel. He noted that the project would eliminate 46 parking spots and create new demand.
