Gaming Commission director named
Robert Williams will run the state's Gaming Commission when it goes into operation on Friday.
The new commission is a merger of the state's Racing and Wagering Board and the Division of Lottery, which Williams already heads. The merger was announced last year by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and postponed in May for Feb. 1, 2013.
The racing board confirmed that Williams will be the acting executive director of the new commission and will be responsible for day-to-day activities. The commission will eventually be led by a seven-member board, 5 appointees from Cuomo and 1 from each chamber of the state Legislature.
Williams also serves as the head of the state's Franchise Oversight Board, which is the main state body responsible for regulating the New York Racing Association. Despite NYRA now being under state control, it is expected that the FOB will continue to operate.
On Friday the Gaming Commission's website is expected to go live.
