UPDATE: Winter racing meet shortened
The New York State Racing and Wagering Board has approved a proposal this afternoon to allow the New York Racing Association to reduce the number of race days for the rest of the winter meet at Aqueduct.
The item was a last minute addition to today's agenda and stems from the recent NYRA Board meeting when they agreed to reduce the number of days for safety reasons. The reduction needs to be approved by the state.
A written request from NYRA Board of Directors Chairman David Skorton is available below.
In total they want to cancel six days: Feb. 6, 13, 14, and 27 and March 6 and 13.
He described this as an important request born out of a concern for equine health and safety. "NYRA's only practical immediate solution is to reduce NYRA's schedule of winter racing dates," Skorton wrote.
