Assembly stakes out its women's equality position
The Assembly majority has aligned itself with Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the fight to approve a women's equality package of bills.
Late Monday night the Assembly Majority, with more than 50 sponsors, introduced the governor's "Women's Equality Act," which includes a controversial abortion provision. The alternative proposal was introduced Sunday night by the Independent Democratic Conference, which advanced a less controversial package.
A copy of the bill text introduced in the Assembly is available below.
In the waning days of the legislative session, which is scheduled to end on Thursday, it is questionable whether either package of equality proposals will become law.
The lead sponsor of the governor's bill is Democratic Assemblywoman Michele Titus.
