Brooklyn Assemblyman out on Monday
Embattled Assemblyman Vito Lopez, D-Brooklyn, will leave office on Monday morning.
Amid a growing chorus for Lopez to resign on Friday, he announced plans to resign at the end of the legislative session in June. Today he faxed a resignation letter to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, which will take effect 9 a.m. on Monday.
A copy of the letter is available below.
When Lopez announced his plans to resign at the end of June, there was a call for him to leave immediately. Silver also drafted a resolution on Friday that could have possibly kicked Lopez out of the Assembly.
It's not clear if this is the end of the Lopez scandal, which has generated a lot of heat for Silver, who appeared to want to hide the allegations against a member of his conference. The New York Times has called on Silver to leave as speaker.
