Merrill signing with Devils
Chris Dilks reported on SB Nation's Western College Hockey Blog that University of Michigan junior defenseman Jon Merrill has signed a three-year contract with the New Jersey Devils, the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2010 draft.
Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger said on Twitter Devils GM/CEO/president Lou Lamoriello said the deal is not yet done, but the plan is to send Merrill to the AHL team in Albany once the deal is complete.
As a freshman, Merrill recorded seven goals and 18 assists in 42 games with Michigan and was considered for the CCHA rookie of the year. As a sophomore, he missed a chunk of the first half of the season when he was suspended for violating team rules, but finished the season with two goals and nine assists in 19 games. He missed half his junior season with a neck fracture suffered in an exhibition game, but returned to post two goals and nine assists in 21 games.
