Now I'm a columnist
Friday, July 18, 2008

EDITOR’S NOTE: Beginning Saturday, Foss Foward will be appearing weekly in the Gazette’s print edition, as a column in the Lifestyles section. The blog, with regular updates, will also continue on this site.

When I started my blog four months ago, I never suspected that it would lead to a print column in such a short period of time. I thought, “Maybe, someday in the future, something will come of this little endeavor.”

Every week I e-mailed the link to my blog to all of my friends, because I assumed that nobody else had any interest in reading what I had to say, and I wanted to trick my editors into thinking I had some kind of audience.

Well, apparently my little trick worked, because the future is now.

Welcome to my column.

My great-uncle Frank has always wanted me to become a columnist, and I’ve always told him that I would never, ever become a columnist. I’ve repeatedly told him that columnists are raging egomaniacs, afflicted with the bizarre delusion that their opinions actually matter. (I’m plagiarizing my first blog post, but I don’t think it’s really a big deal, as approximately 12 people read that thing.) He suggested that when I got older I would see the appeal of sharing my thoughts with the public; I vowed that would never happen.

I meant what I said, which is why I must now concede something I never thought I’d concede: My great-uncle Frank was right. And because I like to think that I’m always right, it pains me to say this.

But Uncle Frank was right. It is fun to share my thoughts with the world, even if those thoughts are about things like basketball, my first rock concert and working at summer camp.

At first, I was going to describe these things as trivial, but then I thought better of it. I mean, they’re trivial in the scheme of things, but not to me, and probably not to you, either. Music, literature, sports, films, the outdoors — these are the things we’re passionate about, the things that bring joy to our daily lives. Almost everyone has a favorite band or film or book or sports team. I know I do: The Replacements, “Stand By Me,” “The Chocolate War” and the Boston Celtics. I’m sure your list is different, but isn’t that part of the fun? That everyone has a different list?

I don’t usually get to write about arts and entertainment in my real job, as the Gazette’s Sunday reporter, although I recently wrote an article about a group of ukulele players that I found pretty entertaining. In my real job, I generally write about things like poverty and the environment and health-care policy. Don’t get me wrong — I like writing about those things. They’re important, and someone ought to write about them. But when I leave work, I spend my time reading novels and going to concerts and watching sports, and it turns out I have plenty to say about those topics, too.

Unlike most print columnists, I’m still in my early 30s, but this isn’t a column geared toward those mythical beings, the young newspaper readers, who are about as plentiful as unicorns and fauns. To write that sort of column, I’d have to write about dating and sex and whether it’s OK to date your best friend’s ex-boyfriend, and where all the hip bars are, and that’s just not something I’m going to do. Not on a regular basis, anyway.

I mean, I did tell my readers that they shouldn’t look for a massage therapist on craigslist.org, and I’ve admitted to drinking the occasional can of Utica Club at the Palais Royale in Albany, but for the most part I shy away from offering advice, and not just because I don’t know whether it’s OK to date your best friend’s ex-boyfriend. (I assume there’s one blanket answer that applies to everyone on Earth, but I’m having trouble deciding whether it’s yes or no.)

Write what you know, they say, and so I think I’ll stick to arts and entertainment, because dating and sex are just way too confusing, and I’m wary of anyone who expresses certainty and expertise in those areas, anyway. Most of the adults I know are interested and engaged in arts and entertainment, and they love to talk about these things, which is good, because they might be the only two areas where I feel comfortable expressing certainty, if not expertise.

For instance: I know that it’s fun to go to the movies, especially when it’s really hot out and you don’t have air conditioning. I know that the major league baseball All-Star game is totally lame, much like the equally lame NBA All-Star game and NFL Pro Bowl. And I know that Prince still sounds as good as he did in 1984.

I mean, doesn’t he?

I like to think I’m always right, but maybe you have a different opinion. I welcome all comments and feedback on my blog, which will continue running right here.

Congrats on the column Sara! You've done well to promote your blog. I'm guessing you have a younger audience that is more familiar with the web than say... the elderly people who read the Gazette print edition? Do you think it's going to be harder to promote your column among the older demographic? Will you pander to them, or will your content be the same as online?

If you're into pandering, I suggest starting each column with some local early-bird specials. Or maybe just print random photographs of someone's grandchildren. Good ideas, right? Dr. Chim has good ideas. Also, you might not want to keep the name 'Foss Forward.' Sounds too much like fast forward. Sounds like something a whippersnapper might say. Let me know if you need help brainstorming.

Cheers,

Dr. Chim

Dr. Chim -
Nope, the content will stay the same. People of all ages can hate A-Rod. That's my philosophy.

Congrats I look forward to reading it. I enjoy your blog - writing what you know is a good rule because people enjoy reading about other people on a personal level rather.
