NFL Picks, Week 14
Every year I participate in a Pigskin Pick ’em group organized by an obnoxious friend of mine from high school who spends his Sundays doing nothing but watching NFL football. I spend very little time watching football, and yet I continue to dream of beating him. And so every week I dutifully make my picks.
As always, winning teams in caps.
DENVER at Oakland — I don’t think the Raiders are going to win ever again.
St. Louis at BUFFALO — This is a winnable game for the Bills, who are a better team than the Rams, even if their record doesn’t reflect it.
Dallas at CINCINNATI — After a pathetic loss to the Redskins, the Cowboys managed to sort of redeem themselves by beating up on one of the worst teams in the league. But they’ll return to their disappointing ways this week, when they take on a decent Bengals team.
Kansas City at CLEVELAND — The Browns have won two games in a row, and should win a third this week.
Tennessee at INDIANAPOLIS — We knew Colts QB Andrew Luck would be good. But we didn’t know he would be this good this fast. Under Luck’s leadership the 8-4 Colts are poised to make the playoffs, and should pick up another win this weekend.
CHICAGO at Minnesota — I’m through with Minnesota. The Vikings have only won one of their past five games, and should fall again this weekend, when they take on a much better Bears team.
San Diego at PITTSBURGH — It’s amazing how bad the Chargers are. After a strong start, they can’t beat anyone! Expect that trend to continue this week, against a Steelers team coming off a strong win against the Ravens.
Philadelphia at TAMPA BAY — I’m not picking the Eagles again this season, I swear.
Baltimore at WASHINGTON — I keep waiting for Redskins QB Robert Griffin III to come back to Earth, but he continues to be amazing. Ravens QB Joe Flacco is a lot of things, but amazing isn’t one of them. The Ravens are good, but the existence of Robert Griffin III makes me like Washington’s chances.
ATLANTA at Carolina — Nobody seems to think the Falcons are all that good, even though their 11-1 record indicates that they are, in fact, a very good football team. Of course, when they’re up against the Panthers, it’s hard to pick against them.
NY Jets at JACKSONVILLE — The worst game of the week. Or the best, if you’re interested in watching two of the league’s most pathetic teams do battle. I don’t have much faith in the Jaguars, but I have even less faith in Team Blowhard.
Miami at SAN FRANCISCO — The Dolphins have been better than expected, but they’re not good enough to beat the league’s elite.
New Orleans at NEW YORK GIANTS — Last week the Giants became just the latest team to fall apart against the talented Robert Griffin III. They’ll rebound this week, against a struggling Saints team coming off one of its worst losses of the season.
Arizona at SEATTLE — Seattle lost to Arizona in week one. Don’t expect history to repeat itself.
Detroit at GREEN BAY — Green Bay was embarrassed last week against the Giants, and they’ll take out their anger on the hapless Lions.
Houston at NEW ENGLAND — My dad expressed surprise when I told him I was picking the Patriots this week, which I thought was funny, since I pick the Patriots to win everything, and it’s going to take more than a game against the Texans to get me to change my ways. But loyalty aside, isn’t this the sort of late-season game the Patriots specialize in winning? And aren’t the Patriots looking more and more like a Super Bowl contender?
Week 13 results:
Me: 10-6 Overall: 119-72
My obnoxious friend: 10-6 Overall: 131-60
