NFL Picks, Week 6
Every year I participate in a Pigskin Pick ’em group organized by an obnoxious friend of mine from high school who spends his Sundays doing nothing but watching NFL football. I spend very little time watching football, and yet I continue to dream of beating him. And so every week I dutifully make my picks.
As always, the winning team is in caps.
New York Giants at CHICAGO BEARS — The Giants’ woes will continue this week when they face the Bears, a decent team that usually plays well at home.
CINCINNATI BENGALS at Buffalo Bills — The Bills are unpredictable this year, as are the Bengals. Both teams are capable of beating teams you wouldn’t expect them to, and the losing to teams they should beat. The Bengals looked good against the Patriots, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they struggle against Buffalo.
DETROIT LIONS at Cleveland Browns — The Lions should take this game because they’re better than the Browns, but expect Cleveland to put up a fight.
Green Bay Packers at BALTIMORE RAVENS — I’m not really sure why the Packers are favored.
Oakland Raiders at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS — The Chiefs have been formidable. The Raiders have been anything but.
St. Louis Rams at HOUSTON TEXANS — The Texans have really been awful, and it’s getting ugly, what with fans burning QB Matt Schaub’s jersey and even, in at least one inexcusable instance, going to his house to yell at him. But there’s some good news on the horizon: They are playing the Rams this week, which means they will win.
Carolina Panthers at MINNESOTA VIKINGS — I was going to pick the Panthers until I remembered that Carolina never rewards my faith. The Vikings have been a mess, but I think they can win this week.
Pittsburgh Steelers at NEW YORK JETS — The Steelers have yet to win a game, while Team Blowhard keeps winning games I expect them to lose, like last week’s game against the Falcons. Anyway, this is a game the Jets should win, and I expect they will.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES at Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Is there a more dismal team right now than Tampa Bay? Maybe the Jaguars ... but it’s close. For the Eagles, this is a good opportunity to get to .500.
Jacksonville Jaguars at DENVER BRONCOS — Biggest mismatch of the season? What will the score be at the half? Denver: 50 Jacksonville: 0? Who knows? Expect slaughter.
Tennessee Titans at SEATTLE SEAHAWKS — I like the Titans. But they have no chance against the Seahawks.
New Orleans Saints at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS — Ugh, I am once again faced with a tough decision: whether I should stop picking the Pats to win every game. After careful consideration, I’ve decided that I can’t stop now. But if they lose, I might change my mind.
Arizona Cardinals at SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS — The 49ers have struggled a bit this year, but they should beat the Cardinals pretty easily.
Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys — Both of these teams are disappointing, but the Cowboys are slightly less disappointing.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS at San Diego Chargers — I keep expecting the Colts to lose, and they keep winning. So I’m picking them this week.
Last week’s results:
Me: 9-5 Overall: 50-27
My obnoxious friend: 8-6 Overall 55-22
