NFL Picks, Week 8
Every year I participate in a Pigskin Pick ’em group organized by an obnoxious friend of mine from high school who spends his Sundays doing nothing but watching NFL football. I spend very little time watching football, and yet I continue to dream of beating him. And so every week I dutifully make my picks.
As always, the winning team is in caps.
CAROLINA PANTHERS at Tampa Bay Buccaneers — This is a pretty disastrous season for the Buccaneers, and it’s looking increasingly likely that they’ll either go 0-16 or 1-15. Either way, they will not beat the Panthers.
Buffalo Bills at NEW ORLEANS SAINTS — The Bills picked up a nice win last week against Miami. But they’re not good enough to beat the Saints.
Cleveland Browns at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS — Who would have thought the Kansas City Chiefs would be the league’s last undefeated team? Even crazier, they’ll be a formidable 8-0 after crushing the Browns.
DALLAS COWBOYS at Detroit Lions — For reasons I cannot explain, I’m picking the Cowboys.
Miami Dolphins at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS — If the Red Sox weren’t in the World Series, I’d be a lot more disturbed by the Patriots’ puzzling week 7 loss to the Jets. Seriously, what happened there?
New York Giants at PHILADELPHIA EAGLES — The Giants finally picked up a win. But they’ll return to their losing ways this week against the Eagles.
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS at Jacksonville Jaguars — Will the Jaguars win a game this season? Possibly. But not this week.
New York Jets at CINCINNATI BENGALS — I have to give Team Blowhard some credit: They’ve been much better than I expected. That said, they will not beat the mighty Bengals.
Pittsburgh Steelers at OAKLAND RAIDERS — The Steelers picked up a nice win last week against Baltimore. But they’re still a team with problems, and I’m not convinced they can string together a three-game winning streak.
ATLANTA FALCONS at Arizona Cardinals — Neither of these teams are very good, so I’m picking Atlanta, just because.
Washington Redskins at DENVER BRONCOS — Boy, I had a great time watching Peyton Manning lose to his former team last week. Sure, it messed up my picks, but the amount of joy I derived from that game far outweighs the sadness caused by losing ground in my quest to win my Pigskin Pick’em pool. Anyway, the fun is over: The Broncos will win this week. Unfortunately.
GREEN BAY PACKERS at Minnesota Vikings — Green Bay is looking better and better, while the Vikings are looking worse and worse. Sorry, Minnesota fans: Josh Freeman might not be the answer.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS at St. Louis Rams — My second favorite team this season should beat the woeful Rams without any trouble.
Last week’s results:
Me: 9-6 Overall: 68-39
My obnoxious friend: 9-6 Overall 73-34
