You can save the world
Thursday, September 25, 2008

Want to save the world? Admit it, you know you do.

Everyone wants to be a superhero. Be it Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain Planet or one of the Power Rangers, we all wanted to be the person who saved the day.

Well, Google is giving you your chance. In honor of it’s 10th anniversary, Google is sponsoring Project 10100, pronounced 10 to the 100th (the numerical value of a google) In the spirit of a search engine, Project 10100 is seeking “ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.”

The catagories for submission include: community, opportunity, energy, environment, education, health, shelter and everything else.

To submit an idea, you simply fill out an application. It doesn’t appear to be that difficult. You can supplement it with a 30 second YouTube video. Submissions are due October 20.

Google will post 100 ideas for the public to vote on and a selection committee will chose up to five winners. Google has committed $10 million to fund the projects.

I have to say, I’m excited to see what comes out of this project. Google itself was a simple idea that changed the world. If anyone can find solutions to the problems our world faces, Google has a pretty good shot.

So go check it out. And do something amazing.

This is a really good idea. I wanted to post a clarification about the "10 to the 100th" part. Google got its name, from when creator Larry Page suggested "googol" to assistant Sean Anderson for the name of their new search engine, "googol" being the mathematical number referencing 10 to the 100th power, referencing how many web pages he wanted the search engine to be able to sort through. Sean checked the domain and registered it since it was available... though he misspelled it as "Google.com". But they decided to keep it any way.
