Keyed Entry retired
Thursday, July 24, 2008

Keyed Entry, the first graded stakes winner of Schenectady native Don Lucarelli's ownership career, was retired from racing today.

Bothered by assorted ailments for much of his career, the 5-year-old Honour and Glory colt won four of 12 lifetime starts and $322,852 in purses for Lucarelli, Don Saylor and Jack Wolf.

Keyed Entry set a Gulfstream Park track record for 7 1/2 furlongs winning the Grade II Hutcheson in February 2006 (1:27.12), beating multiple Grade I winner First Samurai. He ran last of 20 in the Kentucky Derby later that spring, Lucarelli's first Derby starter.

Last year, Keyed Entry returned to Florida and won the Grade III Deputy Minister at 6 1/2 furlongs. He also ran second in the Grade II Gotham and third in the Grade I Wood Memorial as a 3-year-old.

Keyed Entry will enter stud at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Fla. in 2009, for an undetermined fee.

“We are very excited about Keyed Entry joining our stallion ranks,” Bridlewood general manager George Isaacs said in a statement. “He possessed tremendous speed, brilliance, and class on the racetrack, and is a top physical specimen. He’s the real deal.”
