Canadian all-star team named
Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Former River Rats defenseman Bryan Helmer, now with Hershey, will captain the Canadian all-star team at the AHL's annual festivities. The rest of his team was announced today.

None of the current River Rats were selected, but there will be an ex-Albany influence on the club, led by Helmer. Joining him are Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Chris Minard, the AHL's goal-scoring leader, and Providence defenseman Johnny Boychuk, both of whom were voted to the starting lineup.

Defenseman Kyle Cumiskey of the Lake Erie Monsters was also selected to participate. Boychuk and Cumiskey were teammates on the 2006-07 Rats; Minard was here for a short stint in 2005-06.

The PlanetUSA all-star team will be announced on Wednesday. At least one of the Rats will be represented, who I'd guess to be Jakub Petruzalek. Any other thoughts?

Here is the entire Canadian all-star roster:

Hey Phil, question: Is the determination for whomever makes the All-Star team 100% fan voting based or are any of their stats taken into account?

As always, THANKS!

Albany has been in the league, what, 15-16 years now? When are they ever going to host an All Star game?

Fans determine the starters for the AHL all-star game. The rest of the roster is determined by a committee of coaches.
Johnny Boychuk is a big, strong, fun-loving defenseman who played in Albany when he was in the Avalanche organization. In fact, the Avs moved their farm team in each of his first three years with the org: Lowell to Albany to Lake Erie.
As for Albany ever hosting the game, there are a lot of factors the league considers, but the biggest is can they fill the building. Albany is a perfect site in nearly every possible category: geography, TV accessibility, plenty of hotel/banquet space, etc. It is expensive to be the host and is a drain on the host's staff. That being said, I'd love to see it happen!

All-Star Games are a complete waste of time. Does anybody really care about them anymore? Get rid of all of them.

Amen Phil..Amen...I'd even find a way to come to a game. Was able years ago to go to a WHL(all-star) game but that's when Spokane was the laughing stock of the WHL...here in W/s, NC we have SPHL team that tried hard,But at least they are not in last place.

Go Rats !!
