Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird had his first workout since running third in the June 6 Belmont Stakes on Monday at Churchill Downs.
With regular rider Calvin Borel up, MTB went a half-mile in 51 seconds, the time ranking 30th of 42 horses on the day. Clockers caught him in splits of :12.80, :25.20, :38.20, and galloping out five furlongs in 1:04.40.
“He came off the track bouncing just like he was before the Derby,” Borel said. “He’s ready. He doesn’t need much. He’s playful and happy and back to right where he was before the Derby.”
MTB will make his next start in the Grade 2 $750,000 West Virginia Derby on Aug. 1 at Mountaineer Park. Twenty-eight days later, he is scheduled to run in the $1 million Travers at Saratoga Race Course.
Trainer Bennie "Chip" Woolley said MTB will work another half-mile on July 6 and five furlongs on July 13.
“His work next week will be sharper and then we will back off a bit in the next one,” Woolley said. “I thought he’d go in :49 or :50 because he’s a little fresh, the freshest he’s ever been. I thought he’d be in the bridle a little more, but he looked good and came back cool as a cucumber. He was a little more into the bridle at Belmont and got a little shook up. Believe me, I like it a lot better this way.”
Along with MTB, Belmont winner Summer Bird is targeting the Travers, and Preakness-winning filly Rachel Alexandra hasn't been ruled out of facing the boys again in the Mid-Summer Derby. It would be the first time three different winners of Triple Crown races met in the Travers since 1982. That year, Runaway Groom beat Gato Del Sol (Derby), Aloma's Ruler (Preakness) and Conquistador Cielo (Belmont).
Runaway Groom was owned by Schenectady native Albert Coppola Sr. It remains the only time in American racing history that the three classic winners from any given year have been beaten in the same race.
“If it happens, it would be a good thing for racing and that would be a great spot to do it,” Woolley said. “Let’s just see where things fall.”
