Welsh named Union hockey MVP
Union hockey junior center Jeremy Welsh was named the team’s Most Valuable Player at the Dutchmen hockey banquet Sunday at the Mohawk Golf Club.
Welsh, who is now a member of the Carolina Hurricanes, led the Dutchmen in scoring with 27 goals and 17 assists. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the ECAC Hockey tournament and NCAA East Regional.
Sophomore goalie Troy Grosenick was a double winner. He won the Ned Dukehart Award for the highest grade-point average, and the Most Improved Player. Grosenick, who played in only three games last season, went 22-6-3 with 1 .65 goals-against average, a .936 save percentage and five shutouts. He won the Ken Dryden Award as the ECACH's top goalie.
Other award winners were freshman defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere (Rookie of the Year), senior defenseman Taylor Reid (Charlie Morrison Award for extracurricular involvement and academic achievement), junior defenseman Shawn Stuart (Scott Richardson Memorial Unsung Hero Award), senior defenseman Nolan Julseth-White (Coaches Award), sophomore left winger Matt Hatch (Seventh Player Award).
