Catalon leaving WNYT for CBS Sports Network (updates with reaction)
WNYT (Ch. 13) sportscaster Andrew Catalon will be leaving the station in mid-July to join CBS Sports Network full time, he said Thursday.
He will have a larger role calling college basketball and college football games.
"I did CBS Sports Network work in the past with the U.S. Open tennis and college basketball last year," said Catalon, who told station management of his decision on Wednesday. "I really enjoyed it. There's a great group of people there. It's a tremendous opportunity for me."
Catalon spent 9 1/2 years at WNYT, where he was the weekend sports anchor as well as a sports reporter. In addition to his work at WNYT and CBSSN, Catalon has worked on NBC's Olympics coverage. CBSSN is allowing Catalon to do the Olympics again if NBC wants him.
With his increasing workload outside of WNYT, Catalon made the decision last December to go from full-time to part-time at the station. WNYT promoted Chris Onorato to full-time.
"It's really bittersweet to leave Channel 13," Catalon said. "I love that place. I've have so many friends there. I met my wife [NewsChannel 13 11 p.m. weeknight anchor Jessica Layton] there. It's a very special place to me. They've bent over backwards to allow me to do all these opportunities. So, it was not an easy decision. It was a sad day yesterday, to be quite honest. But this is a wonderful opportunity, and it was something I could not pass up."
WNYT sports director Rodger Wyland is happy for Catalon.
"It's tremendous," Wyland said. "It's a great opportunity for him. When he came in here 9 1/2 years ago, he worked really hard. Now with all the hard work he did has paid off for him. I figured, at some point and time, somebody would package something up for him and make him a nice offer, and [CBSSN] did."
