ECAC Hockey team preview: Cornell (with video)

In the fourth installment of my look at the other ECAC Hockey teams, here is my preview of Cornell.

Coach: Mike Schafer (19th season, 347-198-66).
2012-13 record: 15-16-3 (8-11-3 ECACH).
Key returning players: Senior goalie Andy Iles (15-16-3, 2.38 GAA), junior forwards Brian Ferlin (10-14-24), Joel Lowry (12-11-23) and John McCarron (7-12-19), junior defenseman Joakim Ryan (3-20-23).
New players: Forwards Matt Buckles, Eric Freschi, Jeff Kubiak and Jake Weidner; defensemen Holden Anderson, Clint Lewis, Patrick McCarron and Eric Sade; goalies Ryan Coon and Mitch Gillam.
Outlook: It wasn’t a great season for the Big Red, and that’s a rarity under Schafer. The team endured a 1-10 mid-season slump, which included a seven-game losing streak. The Big Red also lost forward Cole Bardreau to a neck fracture in his second game back after helping Team USA win the gold medal in the World Junior Hockey Championships. The ninth-place Big Red almost made up for that in the playoffs, sweeping Princeton in the first round before taking ECACH regular-season champion Quinnipiac to the limit in the quarterfinals. I expect a bounce-back season for Cornell.
Predicted finish: Coaches, fifth. Media: tied for fifth. Me: sixth.
