History made in Union women's hockey team's win over Providence

For the first time in the 11 years the Union women’s hockey team has been at the NCAA Division I level, the Dutchwomen have opened the season 2-0.

Christine Valente and Courtney Turner each scored twice, including the game-winning goal early in the third period, lifting the Dutchwomen to a 5-2 non-conference victory over Providence on Friday night in their Messa Rink opener.

The Dutchwomen beat UConn, 3-2, last Saturday. Last year, the Dutchwomen won their season opener for the first time.

After a scoreless first period, the Friars (0-1) took a 1-0 lead on a Lexi Romanchuk goal 58 seconds into the second. Valente tied it on a power-play goal midway through the second. Turner’s first goal with 7:51 left in the period gave Union the lead.

Valente scored her second goal of the game 2:52 of the third. Ashley Johnston’s power-play goal just over five minutes later made it 4-1.

Brooke Simpson, whose brothers John and Wayne played for the Union Dutchmen, scored a power-play goal for the Friars with 4:43 left. But Turner sealed the deal on an empty-net goal with 1:04 remaining.

Stefanie Thomson had three assists, and goalie Shenae Lundberg stopped 22 shots for the Dutchwomen, who host the Friars again today at 4 p.m.
