School notes: GymRat hoops
Eighteen teams from the Capital Region will be among the 228 in action Saturday and Sunday at the GymRat Challenge Girls’ AAU Basketball Tournament.
Teams will compete in the 16-under, 15-under, 14-under and 13-under age brackets at the University at Albany, Schenectady High Scool, Niskayuna High School, Skidmore College, Saratoga Recreation Center, Gavin Park Recreation Center and Maple Avenue Middle School.
Saturday’s games will go from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday’s games will go from 8 a.m. to the finals beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The event is in its ninth year and is the largest AAU girls’ tournament on the East Coast with close to 2,400 players. Each team plays three pool games with the top teams advancing to the event’s championship bracket that begins play Sunday afternoon.
Breanna Stewart of Connecticut’s NCAA championship team is among the tournament’s large cast of standout alumni.

Past playing standouts Glenn Roy Brust (1964), John Cahill (1970), Mark Joseph O’Neil (1982), Anthony Sericolo, Adam Moore (1989), Matthew Herrington (2002) and Jay Bernardo (2003) will be among the inductees into the LaSalle Institute Athletic Hall of Fame Sept. 19 at The Franklin Terrace Ballroom.
The Thursday night event will begin at 6 p.m. and kick off the school’s reunion wekend.
The 2013 induction class will also include former wrestling coach Jim Sutton and contributors Donald and Eileen Blais.
