School football: Sabres in rare company
Schalmont became the fourth Section II football team to reach 60 points in a state playoff game Saturday when the Sabres humbled Beekmantown, 60-6, in a Class B quarterfinal at AuSable Valley High School.
Schalmont’s previous state playoff one-game high was 38 points in a 38-7 quarterfinal win over Ogdensburg Free Aademy in 2010. Against Beekmantown, the Sabres (11-0) topped that in the second quarter alone with 47.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (Class A) scored 64 points in a 2011 state game against Franklin Academy, Watervliet (Class C) piled up 61 points against Saranac in 1991, and Queensbury (Class A) amassed 60 against Watertown in 1998.
Schalmont will take on Marlboro in a state semifinal game Saturday (No. 23) at 3 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.
