School volleyball: Spartans reach semis
The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls’ volleyball team lost to defending state Class AA champion Our Lady of Mercy, 2-1, in the semifinals of its Hal Van Earden Memorial Tournament Saturday.
Burnt Hills went 5-1 in pool play, splitting its two-set meeting with 2012 state Class B champion John Glenn. Burnt Hills beat Johnstown, a 2012 state Class B semifinalist, in the quarterfinals, 2-0.
Burnt Hills won the last two state Class A titles, and has five New York crowns going back to the 2002 season. When the Spartans copped the 2011 state flag, they beat Our Lady of Mercy.
“I’m very happy with the way my group is coming together,” said BH-BL coach Gary Bynon. “We continue to get better.”
Burnt Hills swept Shenendehowa Friday in a Suburban Council match. Shenendehowa won the last three Section II Class AA titles.
“I thought my kids had a great 24 hours,” said Bynon. “We played a very good Shenendehowa team, and we came back and played well in our tournament.”
Baldwinsville defeated Our Lady of Mercy in the Van Earden final, 2-1.
Bethlehem defeated Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 3-1, in a Suburban Council boys’ volleyball match Monday. The Gazette had the Spartan winning the match.
