School football: Games postponed

By James Schiltz
Thursday, September 12, 2013

Schenectady’s home opener with Bethlehem and five other Section II football games slated for Thursday night were postponed due to an impending thunder storm.
The revised schedule has Schenectady hosting the Eagles in a Class AA crossover game at Larry Mulvaney Field Saturday starting at 7:15.
“The storm coming in looks pretty severe, and they wanted to air on the side of precaution. I can understand that,” said first-year Schenectady coach Mark Cerrone. “It’s an unfortunate circumstance, but you can’t beat mother nature.”
Schenectady and Bethlehem are both looking to bounce back from season-opening losses. The Patriots fell to Fayetteville-Manlius last Friday, 55-20, as part of the Kickoff Classic at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
“Our kids were a little upset when they heard we weren’t going to play, but they got over it pretty quick, and we had a high energy practice,” said Cerrone.
Two of the postponed games will be played today at 3:30, with Niskayuna hosting reigning Section II Class AA champion Shaker and Guilderland hosting Albany. At 4:30, Colonie will entertain East Syracuse-Minoa. Also, Gloversville will travel to Ichabod Crane for a game tonight at 7.
The LaSalle at Columbia game originally planned for Thursday will take place Saturday night at 7:30.
Earlier this week, Thursday’s Ballston Spa at Saratoga Springs games was moved to Saturday night at 8, and tonight’s Mohonasen at Amsterdam game was changed from 7 to 4:30.
The games were scheduled for Thursday to accommodate the Jewish holiday.
“In a short week you can’t work out all of the kinks,” said Cerrone. “This gives us time to work on a couple more things.”
Defending state Class A champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake will play at Troy tonight where Spartans coach Matt Shell eyes his 100th victory. Among the other games, Scotia-Glenville will play at Schalmont, where Devon Willis will continue his pursuit of the Sabres’ all-time rushing record, and Schuylerville will host Glens Falls.
Christian Brothers Academy plays at Shenendehowa Saturday night in an early-season Class AA Empire Division showdown.
