School lacrosse: Niskayuna to host Somers
The Niskayuna boys’ lacrosse team will take on Somers for the fifth time going back to 2009 in a non-league game Saturday at 4:30 at Union College.
Somers, from Lincolndale, is a Section I Class B representative.
Niskayuna defeated Somers in a state Class B regional semifinal game in 2009, 14-5, on its way to the New York final.
In previous non-league games between the teams, Niskayuna beat Somers in 2011 (11-3) and 2012 (14-8), while the Tuskers clipped the Silver Warriors in 2010 (10-9 overtime).
Niskayuna (5-1) lost on a late goal to Darien, Conn., 8-7, in its first game against an out-of-area opponent last Saturday. Niskayuna bounced back with a 17-7 vctory over Bethlehem Thursday, when Mike D’Amario piled up six goals and three assists, and Aidan O’Brien collected three goals and four assists.
Somers (6-3) is coming off Thursday’s 9-7 win over Mahopac, and beat Pleasantville before that, 13-12. Pleasantville is ranked No. 7 in the state among Class C teams.
Somers’ three losses have come against Iona Prep (9-4), Yorktown (14-6) and Bridgewater-Raritan of New Jersey (11-10). Yorktown is the No. 1-ranked Class B team in the state.
Niskayuna is ranked No. 4 in the state in Class A. The rankings mentioned here are from the New York State Sportswriters Association.
