Girls track: Johnston joins small list
Nastasja Johnston of Columbia High School joined an elite Section II group when she went 19-0 in the long jump Wednesday in the Blue Devils Suburban Council meet with Shaker and Mohonasen.
Johnston became just the third area female to reach 19 feet in the event, and boosted her No. 3 standing on the all-time area list. The junior cleared 18-91⁄2 last season in a meet with Colonie and Shenendehowa to climb to No. 3.
Klarissa Ricks of Holy Names is No. 1 on the Section II list at 19-103⁄4 (2011, Penn Relays), and Emily VanDenburgh of Shaker is No. 2 at 19-1 (2012, dual meet at Columbia). VanDenburgh also went 18-91⁄2 (2011, state meet).
“She knows what the Section II record is,” said Columbia coach Doug Hadley. “She’s gunning for it.”
Johnston was among the standouts at the 2013 Schenectady Invitational with a record leap of 17-111⁄2.
Johnston went 18-0 at Saturday’s Colonie Relay Carnival and went 18-53⁄4 Monday in a meet with Shenendehowa and Ballston Spa. She will compete at the Queensbury Invitational Saturday before heading off to Columbia’s Junior Prom that evening, and will compete at the Eddy Meet the following Saturday at Schenectady High School.
“She’s excited to go to Queensbury and see what she can do there,” said Hadley.
Johnston has also been running the 200 and 400 for Columbia this season. Hadley said she ran a 56.9 anchor at the Colonie Relay Carnival when the Blue Devils set a 1,600 school record (3:58.93). Alison Romer, Asia Cornwall and Selena Lott also ran on that relay.
Hadley plans to run Johnston in the open 400 Saturday.
