It was a solid night of boxing Friday at the McDonough sports complex in Troy, with Brian Miller of Schenectady, Mike Faragon of Guilderland and Shawn Miller of Troy all giving good accounts of themselves.
Shawn Miller, a light-heavyweight and the kid brother of heavyweight Shannon Miller, looked sharp and strong in just his second pro fight, earning a unanimous decision over Angel Gonzalez of Yonkers. Both fighters punched themselves out in this four-rounder, Gonzalez to such an extent that near the end, when Miller put him down with a heavy push, he barely had the legs to get back up, and his seconds had to practically carry him to the corner as the bell sounded.
Mike Faragon, a lightweight dubbed the "Baby-Face Beast," went to 9-0 against a stubborn opponent who refused to quit despite a nasty cut at the corner of his left eye, incurred in the first round, which spattered blood all over Faragon's bright gold trunks. Watching Faragon, cool and in control, it's hard to believe he's only 22 years old.
Brian Miller, no relation to Shawn, won the New York State lightweight championship with a unanimous decision over a tough Rafael Luna, from Albany.
