Baseball all-star

University at Albany sophomore outfielder Brendan Rowland, from Colonie High School, was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region second team Tuesday.

Rowland was previously chosen to the America East Conference first team. He batted a team-best .332 and led the conference with 74 hits, which tied the second-best total in UAlbany history. Rowland also tied the single-season record with 50 runs, and he drove in 46 more.

Clifton Park's Katie Allenson, a third baseman-designated hitter for the Keene State softball team, was named to the All-ECAC second team. Allenson led the Owls in hitting with a .477 batting average. She belted nine home runs and and drove in 42.

University of Rochester announced that it will field a varsity women's rowing team in the 2009-10 season. Rowing will become the Yellowjackets' 23rd varsity sport.
