Fantasy football great, but.....
Tuesday, October 7, 2008

I've been hooked on fantasy football for quite some time, and it certainly adds interest to some of the otherwise boring NFL games that pop up from time to time.

But there are times when the need to know what my fantasy guys are doing disrupts my primary train of thought on Sundays, and that's watching my New York Giants.

What a great day it was rooting on the Giants as they tore apart the hapless Seattle Seahawks. But while I was watching the Giants score on nearly every possession, I was getting greedy. Why wasn't Eli Manning throwing the ball more to Amani Toomer? I started Toomer on my fantasy team this week because of an injury to one of my usual starters at wide receiver. Surely, with Plaxico Burress out on suspension, Toomer would get into the end zone.

Unfortunately, Toomer didn't score, but so many other Giants did. And while I love Brandon Jacobs, I started to get a little peeved that he ran in for two scores, when Amani had none. That's what happens with fantasy football sometimes.

Also, in the second half, I started to switch channels on occasion to see what my other fantasy guys were doing. That's not loyal to my real team, the Giants, but it's loyal to my fantasy team, because sometimes, the fantasy stats that crawl on the bottom of the screen aren't complete enough.

For example, there are times when the same guy's stats pop up time after time, just because he's the big star on the team. He might not be involved in the scoring, but his stats are updated constantly. It's annoying to a fantasy football fan.

Then, there's the times when I root against a team that my fantasy player is on. For example, if my kicker is on a team that is scoring a lot of touchdowns, I'd rather have him kick field goals, which are much more lucrative in my league.

Allegiances definitely get blurred when it comes to fantasy football. There are even times when I'm not sure who to root for when my Giants are playing a team with several fantasy players on it. Certainly, I want the Giants to win, but couldn't the Big Blue allow a touchdown or two to my fantasy player opponent?

If this sounds criminal, you're right. That's why it's tough being hooked on fantasy football. It clouds your judgment. Sort of like politics.
