What a great way to honor longtime Union College supporter Dick Roberts.
Union renamed its annual football golf outing the Dick Roberts Memorial, and fittingly, the first Dick Roberts Memorial was played at Mohawk Golf Club, where he was a member for many years. His wife and son were on hand for the festivities today, and a huge contingent of players enjoyed a perfect day of golf.
I was fortunate enough to play with Union Sports Information Director Eric McDowell, as well as Trent Herman, a Union photorapher, and Nick Walsh, a friend of Eric's. We didn't play very well, but we had tons of laughs, despite the fact that poor Eric was constantly returning calls on his cell phone. It seems that he can't really take a full day off playing golf in the sports information business -- especially on a day when two major announcements were made. Not only did former Union hockey coach Ned Harkness die, but Union and Siena announced that their men's basketball teams will play an exhibition game this season.
Eric could hardly make a shot without his cell phone ringing, but we still enjoyed the day.
I remember Dick Roberts very well, and I'm sure he would love the fact that so many friends of Union football enjoyed a perfect day in his memory.
