Mistakes costly for Dutchmen
Saturday, September 20, 2008

Most football coaches speak strictly in cliches, and when you add up the scores of most games, you can understand why.

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. That's what coaches talk about every week, and it's no wonder. They usually determine the outcome of games.

That's how the Union football team got behind so early to sixth-ranked Muhlenberg today on Frank Bailey Field. Two quick Union turnovers on their two possessions led to a pair of quick scores, and the Mules went up 14-0 before Union knew what was going on. Muhlenberg went on to post a 31-14 win.

The Mules are good, but when a good team gets some help, that usually spells doom for an opponent like Union.

As mistake-free as the Dutchmen were in their season-opening victory over Springfield, they were the opposite against the Mules. Muhlenberg recorded six quarterback sacks, a fumble recovery and two interceptions.

I still like the way Union tailback Chris Coney runs with the ball. He had nearly 90 yards on 18 carries. But Union's quarterbacks need more protection, and they've got to learn how to get rid of the ball before they throw costly interceptions or get sacked.

Don't count the Dutchmen out just yet. They are 1-1 and are heading into Liberty League competition, when the games really count. If they can stay away from mistakes, they might surprise some people.
