I don't know which guy gets me angrier, New York Giants malcontent wide receiver Plaxico Burress, or his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
When I covered the first week of Giants camp this summer, Plaxico was the main topic of conversation every day. Basically, he was sitting out trying to get a renewed contract -- which he eventually got -- but he claimed he was skipping practice because his chronic ankle injury, which bothered him throughout the 2007 season, was bothering him again. He refused to talk to the press until camp was almost over.
Burress is now back in the news after the Giants levied a two-game suspension worth more than $235,000. Burress skipped practice on Monday and claimed it was a family emergency, yet he never bothered to call the Giants and tell them why he wouldn't be at practice.
Burress has been a thorn in the side of the Giants' coaching staff ever since he came to the club. He constantly misses meetings and practices, and he breaks team rules all the time.
Yet, his talent is unquestioned. He is the best big-play receiver the Giants have had in recent memory, and his size advantage creates mismatches all over the field. He and Eli Manning seem to click on several big plays every game, and they've combined on 30 TD passes since Burress joined the team.
Yet this guy has been a nuisance all of his professional life, including his days with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And his agent, who couldn't explain why the player didn't even call the Giants to explain his absence, isn't any better.
Even though I'm a big Giants fan and realize Burress is an important cog in their success, I feel the Giants did the right thing. After all, they gave Burress a $35 million contract less than a month ago. How about some loyalty to the Big Blue?
