High scores, or not?
Monday, September 29, 2008

Another good night of scoring in the three Monday major bowling programs tonight, but it has me wondering.

Why are the scores so drastically high one week and then so low the next?

Two weeks ago, 800 triples and 300 games were almost outrageous. Last week, the scoring dipped back to more "normal" numbers.

Tonight, there was only one 300 game, by Dave McLear, and he also had the high triple of the night with a 796 in the Schenectady League at Rolling Greens, where scoring was excellent.

The same held true at Towne Bowling Academy, where the City League featured a 793 by Bob Schoonmaker and a 792 by Bob Martinez.

But at Sportsman's, there were only two 700 triples, led by Matt Czech's 279-770.

We all know that scoring is way up these days, but oil conditions can slow them down at any time. Sunday's Scratch Challenge at Towne Bowling Academy, where five different PBA oil patterns were used, is a great example of how conditions can neutralize even the best bowlers.

The three Monday major leagues are not sport leagues, so we can expect decent scoring every week, but where do you cross the line? We may never find out, because most bowlers like high scores, and they don't like to work too hard to get them.
