Double the bowling pleasure
Two major doubles bowling tournaments this weekend get the holiday spirit in high gear.
The New Era Senior Tour's "Digger's Doubles" event will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Uncle Sam Lanes in Troy. This special tournament has an Over-50/Under-50 format, so that the old-timers from the NEST can pair up with the younger scratch bowlers who dominate the Huck Finn events every week.
Also on tap is the inaugural "Uncle Nick" Doubles at Sportsman's Bowl on Sunday. Named after the late Nick Donato, the Uncle Nick Doubles will have two different qualifying squads before the top teams advance to head-to-head matches in the semifinals. Most of the top bowlers in the area have already signed up, and tournament director Tom Donato is hoping for close to 60 entries. He was well on his way with more than 40 as of mid-week.
Doubles tournaments are extremely popular in our area. Last week's Huck Finn Mixed Doubles drew 53 entries at Boulevard Bowl. I wouldn't be surprised to see both the Digger's Doubles and the Uncle Nick's Doubles draw at least 50, as well.
If you still want to compete in either tournament, there are still openings. Otherwise, take a ride to see either tournament or both. There should be plenty of outstanding competition in each.
