Saratoga Day 37, 8/31

What a Dayatthespa for Chad Brown.

The Mechanicville native watched Dayatthespa win the $100,000 Riskaverse by 1 1/4 lengths over Peace Preserver to give Brown winners in each of the last three days' feature races. He saddled the winner in the P.G. Johnson on Wednesday, the Grade II With Anticipation on Thursday and then Dayatthespa on Friday.

Dayatthespa broke with Assateague at the front of the eight-horse field, and Assateague demanded the lead. Jockey Javier Castellano kept Dayatthespa within a length until starting a run about halfway through the far turn of the mile-long turf race.

“She broke a step slow, maybe just a little rusty from not running,” Brown said. “Javier did a good job to use her that first quarter just to get a spot. He told me that 1 was hell-bent on having the lead, so he just went to Plan B – Plan A for us was going right to the lead – and he executed Plan B beautifully. He thought he had her measured up pretty good turning for home, he told me, and he decided to take her out early. He just let her run down the lane and held everyone else off.”

Assateague faded to last, while Peace Preserver got up for second, edging Alaura Michele by a neck.
