I'm picking Bodemeister
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- I'll keep this brief, since there's enough Kentucky Derby analysis out there to make your head explode.
My pick to win the 138th Run for the Roses is Bodemeister. The Hall of Fame connections certainly don't hurt: trainer Bob Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby three times, and jockey Mike Smith has ridden this race 18 times, winning it in 2005 with long shot Giacomo and finishing second three times, on Prairie Bayou (1993), Proud Citizen (2002) and Lion Heart (2004).
He's by Empire Maker, who beat Funny Cide in the Belmont Stakes, but what I really like about him is his impressive Arkansas Derby victory. I expect the Churchill main track will be speed-favoring by post time, and Bodemeister will be able to get away from the crowd and dispatch Trinniberg on the front end.
I'll round out the superfecta with Gemologist, Creative Cause and Daddy Nose Best.
