Bumper boats, ice cream and rock climbing

By Bethany Bump
Thursday, May 9, 2013

Bumpy's Polar Freeze celebrated its grand opening under new ownership Thursday with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Chamber of Schenectady County.

Bumpy's, at 2013 State St., has long been a favorite local destination for food, ice cream and bumper boats.

Dave and Libby Elmendorf enjoyed their first date at the shop during the summer of 2007, and married five years later. Last year, they paid $265,000 to longtime owners David and Theresa Byrnes, and signed a seven-year lease with the option to buy the site at the end of the second year.

Over the fall and into the spring, the Elmendorfs renovated the place a bit, cleaning the pool, installing a new filtration system, upgrading the shop's electrical system and installing a rock-climbing wall.

The couple was born and raised in Schenectady, and called the business "a worthwhile investment in Schenectady."

Bumpy’s is open in the spring Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.
