High grades for CDPHP Medicare plans

Two of CDPHP's Medicare plans were deemed high quality by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The Albany-based health insurer received 4.5 out of 5 stars from CMS for its Medicare HMO and PPO plans. The overall scores are based on several categories, including screenings, tests, vaccines, management of chronic conditions, member experience with the health plan, member complaints and health plan customer service.

“At CDPHP, we work around the clock to ensure our members have access to the tools and resources they need to live healthier lives," said CDPHP President and CEO John Bennett in a news release. "These Star Ratings are a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality and superior customer service.”

In September, the National Committee for Quality Assurance ranked CDPHP Medicare Choices HMO No. 1 in the state.

The open enrollment period for Medicare runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

I belong to the also highly rated MVP Gold Anywhere Medicare Advantage Plan and I wonder if the CDPHP members are facing the same kind of skyrocketing rates as we are. As of Jan. 2014, my monthly rate with MVP will have gone up 108 percent, or an average annual increase of 36 percent. If I were to stay with this plan and rates were to continue to rise at this same annual level, I would be paying more than $1,100 a month in five years. I have opted to go elsewhere.
