An Oppenheim man may have dropped his .22 caliber rifle Tuesday afternoon causing it to discharge and send a bullet through his chest, Fulton County Sheriff Thomas J. Lorey said Wednesday.

Dennis Gray, 55, of County Highway 108 was airlifted to Bassett Hospital Tuesday and was listed there Wednesday in critical condition.

Lorey said Gray’s son discovered his father on the family’s back porch shortly after 1 p.m. Gray had apparently been shooting at coyotes, Lorey said.

The bullet exited Gray’s body, Lorey said.

Since medical personnel were already treating Gray when deputies arrived, Lorey said investigators have yet to interview the victim to find out what happened.

Lorey said the shooting appears to be accidental.
