Cook gives Union a 2-1 victory over Cornell

Union wins

Matt Cook’s goal 3:53 into the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and gave Union a 2-1 ECAC Hockey victory over Cornell on Saturday at Messa Rink.

It was Union’s fourth straight win. It is also the first time the Dutchmen have swept Cornell and Colgate on the same weekend since Nov. 10-11, 2000. Union beat Colgate, 5-4, Friday.

Cook came down the right wing on a two-on-one, with Josh Coyle on his left. Cook gave Coyle a look, and that drew Cornell defenseman Mike Devin to Coyle. Cook fired a wrist shot under goalie Ben Scrivens.

Dutchmen goalie Justin Mrazek made the lead stand up, making a pad save on a Doug Krantz right-point shot with a stick in his skate with just over two minutes to go.

The Big Red had a power play for the final 1:59 of the game, but didn’t score.

After a scoreless first period, Josh Coyle gave the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead at 9:16 of the second when he ripped a wrist shot through Scrivens’ pads.

The Big Red tied it late in the period when Doug Krantz’s left point shot deflected off Union defenseman Lane Caffaro’s stick and past the right pad of goalie Mrazek.
