Two Amsterdam women were charged with felonies for breaking into two relatives’ homes to steal money and checks, state police said today.

Katie M. Carpenter, 19, of 10 Clinton St., and Tiffany L. Rourke, 22, of 37 Storrie St., are accused of breaking into the home of Carpenter’s aunt Sunday and stealing change and a piggy bank. On Monday, police said, the pair broke into the home of Carpenter’s cousin and stole checks.

Police allege Carpenter failed at an initial attempt but was later successful in cashing one of two checks forged by Rourke.

Police said they pulled the two over in Carpenter’s vehicle late Monday and found beer and a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle.

The pair were arraigned in Mohawk Town Court on burglary and other charges and jailed.
