A new kennel at the site of the Checkerhills Farm Pet Food could be open as soon as April.

Pet Lodges recently got town approval to start a kennel at 53 Freemans Bridge Road. Managing partner Matt Sames said the company is buying the Checkerhills Farm business and keeping that operation, as well as adding a doggie day care and kennel business.

“It’s kind of creating a one-stop shopping location for dog and pet owners,” he said.

Other Pet Lodge locations are in Clifton Park, Albany International Airport, Plattsburgh and Williston, Vt. Sames lives in Rexford and was attracted to the location.

“I know that Glenville is kind of a thriving community and that whole corridor is really developing, so it’s a good business move for us,” he said.

He also is going to reconfigure the floor plan and existing warehouse to create the kennel operation.

Sames said he plans to add eight to 10 jobs to the existing 10.

“I think it’s going to work out great for everybody. They’ve got a great staff there and a great track record,” he said.

The Zoning Board of Appeals last week approved a conditional use permit for the kennel and a variance to allow it to be closer than 50 feet to adjacent properties.

Also on Freemans Bridge Road, work has started on a new Hess gasoline station and convenience store.

In July, the Planning and Zoning Commission approved construction of a 3,514-square-foot facility on a 1.7-acre site at the intersection of Dutch Meadows Lane and Freemans Bridge Road near the Wal-Mart.

Four lots were consolidated for the project. Town Planner Kevin Corcoran said a previous proposal that would have included a car wash was eliminated because of traffic concerns.

Colin Development of Manhasset is supervising the project. Representatives for Hess and Colin Development could not be reached for comment.
